Montana Walleye Circuit News for 2019

We are well underway preparing for the 2019 Montana Walleye Circuit season! There will be four tournaments again this year. Unfortunately, we were not able to add a fifth tournament this year, but 2019 will be a great year with for our anglers and our sponsors as well, and we will not give up on our pursuit of an additional tournament for 2020. Remember to attend the State meeting in Glendive on March 23, 2019 where we will be presenting the awards for the 2018 Montana Walleye Circuit season.

While we are waiting for open water again, please take time to be involved in the public scoping for the Fisheries management plan and send in your comments. The Montana FWP is responsible for managing our fisheries and they are asking that we provide input to help them make management decisions. Don’t forget to mention that the dollars Tournament anglers spend are a huge economic impact to our local and state economies.

The tournament dates and Tournament directors are listed as follows. The entry forms are also in this issue. There are some notable changes on the forms! Please make checks payable to the Montana Walleye Circuit and mail them directly to Tammy. The tournament directors are listed here below, be sure and thank these folks for their work making great tournaments:

She has agreed to take all entries this year to help the tournament directors and allow them to focus on preparation for making their tournaments better.

As always—Don and I look forward to working hard for all of you. Our sponsors and anglers are important to us and please let us know what we can do to make your tournament experiences better!

Final Fort Ft Peck Championship Series

By Steve Harada

Well, the WUM Fort Peck Championship Series went down the wire with an exciting finish at the final event, the Hell Creek Walleye tournament, with 90 teams chasing the elusive walleye. The series was fished by 578 different anglers throughout the Fort Peck events. Wayne Wilcox from Laurel ended up as the Angler of the Year with an exceptional season! Points are calculated on the best two tournaments combined score. He and his partners captured a runner up spot at Rock Creek with nearly 56 pounds and a fifth at the MT Governor’s Cup Awesome job Wayne! The always tough stick from Coram, Jason Mundel came in second place in the AOY with a third at Gov Cup and third at Hell Creek. Third place honors go out to Zeik Gordan of Helena who captured a second place at Rock and sixth at Hell Creek.

Team of the Year competition awards also were a thriller with Wayne Wilcox and Zeik Gordan taking first place honors. Second place went to mixed couple team from Huntley, Andy and Sam Rose with solid performances at their two events. Robbie and Russ Seymour finished up with third place and the father/son duo also put together an impressive tournament trail.

The mixed/couple champions award goes to Sam and Andy Rose with their 8th place finish at Rock and 12th place at the MT Gov Cup, they put together two consistent days at the Cup while battling 40+ mph winds on Day 2. Second place mixed couple goes to Jessica and Chris Kwasney from Circle with a runner up award at Gov Cup and 19th place at Hell Creek an had an awesome season. Third place goes out to father/daughter team of JR and Tyana Rasmusan of Glasgow who fished great in the 2018 Series, as well.

The adult/child competition was captured by Owen Wilcox from Laurel and Keeley Montgomery of Miles City. This is two in a row for Owen who paired up with Wendy Ross last year and had an awesome season, too. Presley and Ryan Mehling from Hardin had a great season to capture the runner up awards. Third place honors go out to father/son team from Sidney Doug and Justin Filler who also had a splendid season of fishing.

Todd Dooley and Ryan Dempsey of Sidney caught and released the largest walleye of the Series with a 13.25 pound beast at the last event of the year! Just goes to show that on Fort Peck your always only one bite away from a monster fish. Awards for the 2018 Ft Peck Championship Series will be presented at the state banquet March 23, 2019 in Glendive.

Congratulations to all of the top anglers and thanks to all of the nearly 600 anglers who participated in the 2018 Fort Peck Championship Series. Broadwater Rod and Gun Club 2018 Walleye Derby Recap

On July 14, 2018 The Broadwater Rod and Gun Club held its Annual Walleye Derby on Canyon Ferry Lake. 37 teams took off from Broadwater Bay at the Silos early in the morning. Major sponsors were Lund, Townsend Marine and State Bank of Townsend. Other sponsors include: Town and Ranch True Value, Rocky Mountain Supply, Designer Tackle.

A huge thank you to the volunteers, some who were there all day in the heat and wind, this Derby would not happen with your dedication.

Rock Creek Tournament

By Steve Harada

Ninety eight teams competed in this year’s event and it started out with a blast. A northwest blast of 20+ mph winds helped kick off the tourney on Saturday morning in a true rock and roll fashion. This years’ winners were husband and wife team of Gabriel and Sharlee Schlosser of Glendive who lead from wire to wire. Obviously, a little wind and waves didn’t hamper this couple as they went out and caught 46.54 pounds of walleye on Day 1. Gee whiz only a 9.3# average! Second place for the first day was Wayne Wilcox of Laurel and Zeik Gordon from Helena with an also impressive 39.58 pounds. Right on their heels were Bobby McElvain of Billings and Roy Mehling of Fairview with 37.18 pounds. Some big walleye were brought in with Matt Poole and Ricci Olson from Glasgow had the largest by catching a 14.37 pound hog. The largest northern was a tie and was caught by Ron McNary & Jerome Papineau and Cole Wirth and Larry Mindt with 37 ¼”. Not a single wee walleye was measured on Saturday with the minimum requirement of 9” or less, apparently not achievable by 196 individual anglers. However, this just added to the thrill of the wee walleye competition by making a double pot for Sunday. I had on what I thought was a potential “wee winner” that turned out to be a dang perch. Jason Eggebrecht & Drew Alpers were able to persuade a 9” dink into the boat to capture the award!

The overall Rock Creek tournament record of 93.34 pounds of walleye for the two-day event held by Ken Schmidt and Todd Riggs of Glasgow was looking like it could possibly by erased by the Schlosser team who were on course to right in there. Rock Creek Tournament has a $1000 dollar bounty to any team that bests the record weight. Sunday was a gorgeous day but without the wind and waves that some anglers favor. Gabe and Sharlee went out and caught 11.88 pounds that was enough to hold their lead and win the 2018 Rock Creek Tournament with 58.42 pounds and win the mixed couple award to go with their prizes. Wayne Wilcox and Zeik Gordon also maintained their runner up spot with 16.26 pounds for a nice two-day total of 55.84 pounds. Bobby McElvain and Roy Mehling made a surge towards second with 18.28 pounds and a total 55.46, a mere .38 pounds out second and stayed in for the 3rd place award. Winners of the adult/child competition were Owen Wilcox and Keeley Montgomery. Wow, talk about a game of inches or ounces! The largest walleye for the day was a 13.02 pound beast caught by daughter and father team of Tyana and JR Rasmusan of Glasgow. It appears these Glasgow teams have the big walleye thing figured out. Day 2 northern was another tie with a 38” pike caught and released by Corey Wieland & Jon Kleinke and Ron Evans & Donny Hagemeister. The Cool Under Pressure Award was also a tie with teams Dayle and Eric Stahl and Gavin MacPherson and Randy Hanson both advancing 57 places from Day 1 to Day 2.

Congratulations to all of the anglers who cashed in and to all those who participated in this year’s event. A big thank you goes out to all of our sponsors, tournament patrol boats, Rock Creek Marina (our gracious hosts) and to all of the volunteer tournament staff and other folks who pitch in a lending hand!
